about

1987, Milwaukee. It was a time of forming bands quickly in a flurry of energy, passion and ideas and often disbanding them just as quickly as they formed - as people moved, got married, took on more demanding jobs, went off to school or as band members just burnt out on each other. Ozone started as me on guitar and vocals, my brother Phil Hanrahan on vocals and Zach Egan on drums. We did a couple of shows like that, but really solidified a sound when we had the good fortune to add the ferocious and versatile bassist Jeff Villwock (who very sadly passed in 2020). He could really make that Rickenbacker talk and he and Zach coalesced to form a formidable rhythm section. I was going through a period of political awakening and was seeing the bared teeth of the American Dream where perhaps I had once seen a smile, and my lyrics reflect this. I wrote the words and music, with Phil contributing lyrics for "George Michael" & "Landon," songs that try to come to grip with the absurdity of mass culture in the 80s. Phil's muscular, commanding lead vocals power those and all other songs in the set, except "Sugar Rain." I was finding my voice as a songwriter and the kick of singing loudly and honestly in unison with my brother about what we were witnessing felt good. Indeed, the agitprop lyrics, "There was a killing in that house last year / some ex-worker freaked out after too much beer / the pressure to compete and achieve / has dug more graves than you'd believe," remain relevant, while the frenetic and melodic music of Ozone still offers some inspiration, I believe. -- DH, Chicago, 2023
